Service Description
For centuries, Japanese artisans have created stunning silk braided cords—kumihimo—using handcrafted tools and fine threads to embellish and fasten traditional clothing. This respected art form continues today, with different schools showcasing distinctive styles. In this class, we’ll explore kumihimo braiding using the modern kumihimo disk, which makes this beautiful technique both accessible and affordable. You’ll learn to weave a simple and relaxing eight-strand braid using pearl cotton, crochet thread, or similar fibers. This project is wonderfully meditative—perfect for working on while chatting, relaxing, or even waiting for an appointment. We’ll also cover finishing techniques so your cord is ready to use, and discuss the many creative ways kumihimo can be incorporated into projects. To complete the experience, you’ll receive a colorful handmade bag to showcase your braided cord and store your kumihimo work in progress.
